LAE Daily Brief - 05/01/26
Round-up of the most critical LAE news from the past 24 hours
China’s low-altitude economy (LAE) enters a new era of comprehensive regulation and traceability with three major drone rules taking effect on May 1. Meanwhile, the industry continues to expand its operational footprint, supported by strategic supply chain advancements and state-backed initiatives in general aviation power systems.
Regulatory Milestones
Three Major Drone Regulations Take Effect May 1, 2026 (民航局 / 北京市政府)
On May 1, 2026, China implemented three significant regulations governing unmanned aerial vehicles, marking the industry’s transition into a “full-process traceable” era. Two mandatory national standards, the “Civil Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Real-Name Registration and Activation Requirements” and the “Civil Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System Operational Identification Specification,” now require all civilian drones to be registered and to broadcast real-time identity and flight data. Concurrently, the “Beijing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Management Regulations” took effect, designating the entire capital as controlled airspace, requiring prior approval for all outdoor flights, and banning the sale, rental, and transport of drones and core components into the city. Industry Expansion & Supply Chain
Xinhua Highlights Nationwide Expansion of China’s Low-Altitude Economy (新华网)
A comprehensive report by Xinhua detailed the rapid expansion of China’s low-altitude economy across various sectors and regions. Meituan’s drone delivery network has now established 70 routes across Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, accumulating over 780,000 orders by the end of 2025. In the agricultural sector, drones deployed in Heilongjiang are covering 300 to 500 mu per day, increasing efficiency by up to 30 times compared to manual labor while reducing costs and boosting yields. The report also noted the inclusion of LAE development in the 15th Five-Year Plan, emphasizing refined airspace management and the expansion of low-altitude consumption. [2]
EHang Electric Propulsion Supplier Completes Production Line Commissioning (亿航智能 / 英搏尔)
Inphi, the electric propulsion system supplier for EHang, has successfully completed the commissioning of its production line at the Yunfu joint-venture facility. The facility is currently awaiting its production license, after which it will commence formal deliveries to EHang. This milestone supports EHang’s strategic focus for 2026, which centers on the normalization of commercial operations for the EH216-S and the type certification process for its new long-range VT35 aircraft, designed for inter-city and cross-sea routes. Meituan Drone Delivery Surpasses 780,000 Orders with Focus on Emergency Logistics (美团)
Meituan’s unmanned aerial vehicle delivery service has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 780,000 cumulative orders across its 70 operational routes in major Chinese cities by the end of 2025. Operating primarily from rooftop platforms at shopping centers, the service is increasingly integrating into the daily consumer landscape. Meituan executives indicated that future expansion will prioritize high-value emergency and medical supply deliveries, further demonstrating the practical utility of low-altitude logistics. [4]
Aero Engine Corporation of China Launches LAE Power Industry Initiative (中国航发)
The state-owned Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC) has launched a “general aviation power industry co-creation initiative” to bolster the development of the low-altitude economy. To spearhead this effort, AECC established a new subsidiary, AECC General Aviation Power Technology Shanghai Co., dedicated to developing advanced power systems for general aviation and LAE aircraft, including turboprops, small turbofans, and hybrid-electric propulsion systems. This move underscores the strategic national importance of securing a robust domestic supply chain for LAE propulsion technologies. [5]
